In contrast to the baby grand piano, handsome narra wood portal and golden stone walls, a pewter Art Deco vessel cradles humble alamanda flowers, yellow statice and white baby’s breath.

THE THREE-LEVEL HOME of Wendell and May Ty is built on an 800 sq m lot in green meadows, an exclusive gated community. The palatial scale of the house, outfitted in a wide range of materials, and the eclectic décor are immediately apparent in the gleaming white mactan coral stone surfaces that look like travertine, and an ever-changing collection of objets d’art.

Visitors to the house are greeted at the front door by a gothic-inspired bishop’s chair designed by Jim tan. Off the foyer, the cathedral-ceiling living room holds a grand piano, a modern L-shaped seating area and a cantilevered log wall console that supports the family’s welcoming Buddha. The unique marble flooring of the adjacent lanai features a boldly graphic basketweave pattern created from three different kinds of marble from india and italy.

Jim tan, the family’s design consultant and stylist, encourages the owners with his own individualistic flair, advising: “Be bold, don’t be afraid to break the rules. Trust your instincts. You may surprise yourself.” on the coffee table, he arranges a still life with uncommon flowers—tiny passion fruit blossoms set beside two silver figures of exotic birds.

The Tys’ chinese-filipino roots are evident in the round dining table for twelve, where Jim tan explains his floral design. “I like making the commonplace look uncommon.” He creates an overscaled floral “nest” on the central rotating Lazy susan using concentric circles of purple and yellow statice flowers, along with their stalks, topped by a low vase of yellow roses. The vibrant colors of the flowers are echoed in the china—a modern departure from the usual all-white or gilt-edged service.

The home owners, who run various retail enterprises, are inveterate collectors of unusual art objects. “there’s a creative challenge with each purchase,” May Ty says. How about an African tribal figure by the grand piano? or Bernie sason’s modern chairs by the Lladro porcelain dancers? the eclectic collecting goes on. “But we edit, edit and edit,” reassures husband Wendell.
